Carlos Sainz Jr. is not sure which team he would race for at the Formula One Malaysian Grand Prix, reports claim.
He left the Singapore event not sure if it would be his last race for Toro Rosso.
Sainz debuted in the Formula One in the junior team of Red Bull back in 2015. He was set to be loaned to the Renault works team in 2018 but his career best result in fourth place on Sunday in Singapore complicates things.
Toro Rosso boss Franz Tost has asked that he remain with them as they do not want to let him off yet. There are speculations that the 23-year old could be the replacement for Renault’s Jolyon Palmer. The rumours have it that he could race as soon as October 1 in Malaysia as Palmer could buy out his contract of USD3 -7 million.
Following his impressive run in Singapore, Sainz was asked if it would be a befitting departure to Toro Rosso, he replied that it could be but that he was also not sure if it was his last.
“I’m still not thinking this was my last race. I told my team and my mechanics beforehand to not worry about what happens next. Let’s just do a perfect weekend,” he added.
Renault is expected to use the Spaniard as a deal sweetener as McLaren and Honda split. Renault is expected to power McLaren from next year while Toro Rosso would join with Honda. With Sainz keen on moving up the ladder, Renault would give up their partnership with Rosso to get McLaren.
There are even reports from top rated sources that Sainz agreed with the French company and could partner Nico Hulkenberg. With Palmer yet to win a World Cup point, things are really complicated.
