Lotus have been consistently showing an improvement in form in the last few races, and this is primarily due to the team managing to get the best out of the tyres. Lotus Trackside Operations Director Alan Permane says that the current tyres suit Lotus more than ever and this is one of the reasons for the impressive performance. He even says that the team is now on par with Red Bull when it comes to race pace. This is because the team has suggested that the car in such a way that it performs well with the current Pirelli tyres.
Permane has stated that the team has been working on this specific concept since the Budapest Grand Prix. Lotus managed to get Kimi Raikkonen in the second position at this Grand Prix. This result has helped him close the gap on table leader Sebastian Vettel, while also managing to move into the second position ahead of Fernando Alonso. Lotus other driver Romain Grosjean was also extremely competitive as well, as he qualified in the third place. The Belgian Grand Prix during the weekend, though, will be different because of the track temperatures, but Permane is hoping that the team will be able to demonstrate their superiority this weekend as well.
“From Budapest we’ve learned that the ‘new’ tyres seem to suit our car relatively well. We can only assess their effect on performance relative to the competition around us, and I’d say we’ve not done too badly on that front. Mercedes for example seem to be very well suited to them, but Ferrari perhaps not so much. Although we were slightly quicker than them in both Germany and Hungary, ourselves and Red Bull look very evenly matched. I wouldn’t say they’ve changed our position too much,” said Permane ahead of the Belgian Grand Prix.
